Jewelry History

From the beginning of time it seems, people have adorned themselves with all types of jewelry. The history of jewelry really dates back to the early cavemen, who wore necklaces made of animal bones like tusks. Perhaps they were to ward off “evil spirits” or to display the prowess of hunters.

The Sumerians were the first in recorded history to fashion jewelry from gold, silver and gemstones, dating back to the 3rd millennium B.C.

The Egyptians were famous for their elegant jewelry and were often buried with their ornate gold necklaces, rings and bracelets. In the ruins of the ancient city of Troy, many wonderful jewelry pieces were discovered buried in ancient tombs.

Fashions in jewelry come and go. The evolution continued through Victorian design, Edwardian design, Art Nouveau, Art Deco design, Retro design, The Fifties, The Sixties, The Seventies and into modern days where body jewelry is the rage among the young. Or is that so different from the tribes that wear bones through their noses or lips, or boar’s teeth ankle bracelets?

The traditional styles, however, never go out of style. The everlasting strand of pearls. The diamond and gold engagement ring. The elegant jewelry choice for the evening – the diamond earring chandelier and the diamond choker or diamond necklace. Or the ever-popular gold chain

Whatever the occasion, you can be sure to be in style with fashion jewelry, or your favorite gemstone, from rubies and emeralds to garnets and sapphires. Or perhaps a pair of pearl earrings, with a pearl pendant would be your choice. One thing is certain, jewelry is here to stay!!
